El Crédito por ingreso del trabajo (EITC, siglas en inglés) es para personas que trabajan, pero no tienen ingresos altos. Los individuos que califiquen podrían pagar menos impuestos federales o cero impuesto - hasta podrían recibir un reembolso de sus impuestos.

La cantidad del crédito EITC varía dependiendo de los ingresos totales del trabajo, otros ingresos y otras consideraciones. tenían dos o más hijos(as) que calificaban o menos de $26,928 si tenían sólo un hijo(a) que calificaba. Un trabajador sin un hijo(a) calificado(a) debe tener un ingreso bruto ajustado modificado de menos de $10,200, tener por lo menos 25 años de edad y menor de 65, no calificar para ser reclamado como dependiente en la declaración de impuestos de otra persona y debe haber vivido en los Estados Unidos por más de la mitad del año.

Los empleados que reclamen el crédito no pueden haber ganado más de $2,350 en ingresos provenientes de inversiones, como intereses o dividendos y no puede ser el hijo(a) calificado(a) de otra persona. Se aplican reglas especiales para el personal militar de los Estados Unidos y a los extranjeros no residentes.

Los empleados, sus cónyuges (si declaran conjuntamente) y cualquier hijo(a) calificado(a), deben tener un número válido de seguro social (SSN, siglas en inglés) emitido por la Administración del Seguro Social. Si el número fue obtenido simplemente para recibir beneficios federales, como estampillas de alimentos, este número no es válido para obtener el credito EITC y la tarjeta del seguro social declarará "no válido para trabajar." Ciertos empleados podrán obtener dinero extra en el cheque de su sueldo en todo del año con el pago adelantado del crédito por ingreso del trabajo (Advance EITC, siglas en inglés). Aunque el IRS desea que las personas que califiquen para el crédito lo reclamen, también están advirtiendo a los contribuyentes que quieran reclamar el crédito, de estar seguros de que califican. Para aquellas personas a quienes el IRS les negó el crédito EITC en 1997 y 1998, necesitan adjuntar la Forma 8862, "Información para reclamar el crédito por ingreso del trabajo después de un rechazo," en inglés, en su declaración para reclamar el crédito para 1999.
