(ARA) - Today, one out of every two American families share their lives with a dog, cat or both. In a recent survey, 84 percent of the respondents said they consider their pets as children, and 83 percent of them said further that they would risk their lives for their pet.

A low tech/high touch 'Pet Scan'?

Dr. Schoen explains how our animals often fall victim to cancer, diabetes, arthritis, heart disease, etc. because of the adulterated foods we feed them.

He advises us to "read those labels or you may be serving your pet ground-up chicken beaks!" Another cause of animal illnesses: lifestyle issues such as loneliness, isolation, jealousy, etc. that are remarkably similar to our own!

He offers practical advice on natural healing for animals - a hands-on "pet scan" you can do at home.

He also explains how to increase inter-species communication with your animal companion.

The runt of the litter finds a home.

One of the stories Dr. Schoen relates in his book is that of a young girl who went to an animal shelter with her parents to select a dog.

There were six puppies in one cage.

Five were healthy, eager little canines, who vied for her attention, signaling:

"Take me!"

In the back of the cage, shy and withdrawn, with his ears down and a sad look on his face, was the sixth pup.

As she called to him, he shakily stood up on his damaged legs and limped toward the front of the cage.

"That's the one I want," the girl told the shelter worker.

Puzzled, the shelter worker asked the girl why she would choose that one, when there were so many who were clearly in better shape and more outgoing.

The girl slowly limped closer to the cage.

She too was damaged, and recognized a kindred spirit. "He needs me, and I need him," she whispered, extending a hand to her new friend. That incident, says Dr. Schoen, illustrates why terms like "owner" and "pet" do not adequately express the nature of the relationship that can, and ideally should, exist between us and our animal companions.

Dr. Schoen's long-term vision is to create innovative, nontoxic approaches to animal health, environmental health and human health care, and integrate them into a new interdisciplinary program with a commitment to compassionate care for all beings.
