Building Futures with Construction

Children of all ages are fascinated by construction projects and naturally curious about the exciting tools, big machines and techniques used in putting up a building. Parents know that kids can spend hours watching construction workers on a building site, watching construction videos or even playing with construction toys.

Couple this love of construction with an educational component and you have a winning combination. The Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) has done just that. Working with Scholastic, Inc., AGC has developed "Build Up! A Tool Kit for Learning," which taps into kids' natural curiosity as it helps students understand the practical application of the math and science they're studying.

"The builders, owners, architects and engineers of tomorrow are in grade school classrooms today," says Dennis Day, executive director, public affairs for AGC. "Build Up!" takes fifth-grade students on explorations in construction from their classroom to the wider world through an integrated curriculum that includes the video "How Do They Build Bridges?" and the book "Up Goes the Skyscraper."
The materials, packaged in a tool box, take students on a journey of discovery inside the structures that make up their world. It teaches them basic principles of construction and guides them through hands-on activities. Each kit contains classroom exercises, learning guides, materials and supplies for 60 students.

"Build Up!" looks ahead to reveal futuristic building challenges, such as mile-high buildings and extra long bridges. The program also addresses issues like environmental challenges including land use considerations and energy efficient buildings. Students learn firsthand about the variety of work that takes place on a construction site through a behind-the-scenes look at the constructed world. Classroom projects also make students aware of hazards associated with construction sites and emphasize the importance of safety.

"As America moves into the 21st century, children need a better understanding of a broad range of careers and mentors who can better inform them about their opportunities," said Ernest Fleishman, Scholastic's senior vice president for educational and corporate relations. "Scholastic is pleased to join AGC in developing 'Build Up!' because the program satisfies both of these career needs. Students will benefit from this program no matter what career they choose."

The Minneapolis school district is just one example of how the program can be integrated into a curriculum. The district, which serves 49,000 students, recently decided to add a vertically integrated construction and design occupations career program. AGC of Minnesota and its membership are taking the lead in partnering with the school district to help design and implement this program with the intended outcome of successfully preparing students for whatever post-secondary education or career opportunity they choose to pursue.

"Build Up!" is the first phase of AGC's Construction Futures, AGC's educational outreach program. The second phase of the program, called "On Site!" is geared toward middle school students. It is a multi-media program for use in social studies and math classes with links to language and science.

The program begins with early construction in ancient Rome and works through to construction today, where environmental, economic and social impacts are considered as new projects are undertaken. A popular component of the program is "The Most Astounding Structures" video, developed in conjunction with the History Channel, which provides a tour of the most unique structures on earth.

"Not everyone who is introduced to this information will be going into construction, but these students will be the people who sit on city and county planning commissions. They are the future voters, mayors and community leaders and from this program, they will have a better appreciation for the importance of construction in their lives," said Day.

Both "Build Up!" and "On Site!" are available free to schools. The kits are sponsored by AGC members and chapters. AGC's involvement does not end there. Members lead in-service workshops for faculty, as well as working directly with students in the classroom. For more information, contact AGC at (703) 548-3118, or visit the organization's web site, www.AGC.org.
