In a controlled laboratory setting, the technician starts the machine, releasing an 8-pound metal weight. In the blink of an eye, the weight free falls downward, pounding against a piece of vinyl siding. The technician removes his safety goggles to carefully inspect his work, scrutinizing the siding panel for its reactions to the blow.

Would the vinyl siding on your home stand up to a test like this? Or will it crack or tear during installation? Will it withstand the effects of weather and winds? Homeowners with vinyl siding products certified through a new Vinyl Siding Institute (VSI) program can answer these questions with confidence, assured that the quality and beauty of their homes will endure.

Certified vinyl siding products ensure consumer satisfaction because they meet or exceed the strict quality requirements of ASTM D3679, an established industry standard. Any vinyl siding product that bears the official VSI certification logo has undergone a battery of quality tests, the results of which are verified by an independent inspection laboratory. That laboratory, Architectural Testing, Inc. (ATI), not only reviews product test results, but also conducts unannounced, on-site plant inspections twice each year to confirm that the product still meets or exceeds the standard.

Of course it's nice to know that you've invested in a quality product, but how realistic can these certification tests really be? According to Dave Moyer, ATI's Director of Testing Services, you'd be surprised at what precise measures are taken to ensure the quality of the vinyl siding you install on your house.

Picture a mid-summer's day without a cloud in the sky. What might be a perfect backdrop for your afternoon picnic is yet another bout of solar abuse for your home's vinyl siding. As part of VSI's certification program, technicians simulate this typical setting by mounting the vinyl siding product on a wall in a lab, the same way installers mount siding on the walls of your home. Using an infrared heat source, technicians slowly raise the temperature of the panel, reproducing the effect the sun would have as it reaches its peak position during the day. At a minimum temperature of 120 degrees Fahrenheit, they examine the vinyl siding, checking for any signs of buckling, bulging, or rippling due to heat.

As Moyer notes, "One buckling panel can ruin the appearance of an otherwise attractive home. The laboratory test for surface distortion, which slowly warms the panel at about 3 degrees per minute, verifies that certified siding products are made to withstand normal heat exposure."

So certification tests can use lab technology to imitate the sun's punishing rays, but what about durability in different climates? It's called weathering performance, and it's one of the most lengthy and complex certification tests. The product samples are mounted on racks in three different geographical areas of the United States and left to brave the elements for a minimum of two years. The test sites vary, but always include placements in three main climates: hot/humid, dry/arid, and northern/industrial. At least every six months, technicians visit the sites and measure evidence of color fading and general cracking, splitting, or flaking. This test ensures that your certified siding will remain a uniform color over time, so your home continues to look attractive.

How will your siding react to hurricane-force winds or sudden temperature fluctuations? These are other questions that VSI's certification program addresses. And what about getting what you pay for-can you be sure that your siding is the thickness, length, width, and color the brochure says it is? With certified siding, those and other measurements are verified by the independent laboratory.
