Over the past 30 years, the lawn care business has grown into an industry with increasing sophistication and expertise. As a result of this growth, the concept of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) has become standard operating procedure for progressive lawn care companies.

Shared Responsibilities

IPM is an integrated approach to maintaining lawns and gardens that uses pest prevention as a primary tactic. Pest prevention starts with healthy lawns. Healthy lawns can withstand a higher level of pest problems - weeds, insects or diseases - before noticeable damage or loss of turf occurs. Healthy lawns are maintained using good horticultural practices such as proper mowing and watering techniques, over-seeding, fertilization, and core aeration.

The relationship between the customer and the company must be a partnership, because regardless of what program or services a customer chooses, the end result will be a healthy lawn only if both parties are doing their part.

For a homeowner, this means watering and mowing properly. It may also mean planting more suitable grasses in certain areas that will be better able to withstand both pest and environmental stresses. The homeowner is encouraged to monitor the lawn and keep the company informed about any changes in appearance so that both can proactively manage any potential problems. An IPM-based company will respond to customer concerns by visiting the property to identify what the problem is and whether treatment is required.

Visual Checks and Recommendations

One of the foundations of IPM is monitoring for potential pest issues that can affect the overall health of the lawn. For this reason lawn care companies that adhere to IPM principles perform most, if not all, services separately. This results in more visits to the property. And the more a company visits a site, the more effectively it can monitor the lawn at regular intervals throughout the season.

Part of the teamwork approach to IPM involves customer participation in the monitoring process. Customers are encouraged to monitor their lawns in between visits and communicate with the company about any concerns they might have.

Controlling Pests

Pest control measures are warranted when monitoring has identified a specific pest that has reached or exceeded a threshold level that threatens the overall health of the lawn. All control options are considered, and the most effective treatment is selected. In some situations such as a disease, adjusting cultural practices such as mowing and/or watering accordingly is the most effective means of long-term control.

The application of a pest control product is sometimes the most effective means of controlling infestations of weeds or insects. Following label directions for federally registered control products ensures that the minimum amount of product is applied to control the pest. In addition, spot treating as opposed to blanket applications are performed whenever pests are present or suspected in specific areas of the lawn.

Lawn Care Recommendations

For the lawn care industry, another important aspect of IPM is what criteria go into a program recommendation. Before a program is recommended considerations like geographical location, soil and grass types, surrounding vegetation, and use habits (i.e. high traffic, kids, pets) of the customer are taken into account. Not only does this approach produce a customized and appropriately priced proposal to the customer, but it also ensures that only relevant recommendations are being made so that products are not applied unnecessarily.

IPM is a balanced and logical approach to lawn care. This method of landscape management not only recognizes the importance of pesticides as one tool among others, but it also ensures the judicious and wise use of these products.
