As our population ages and Baby Boomers retire, over the next twenty years, 127 million Americans, or about one-third of us, will have coastal addresses states Jeffry A. Zinn, senior analyst for Natural Resources Policy, in his Congressional Research Service Report. Another one-third of us will live within 100 miles of a coast. Our science classes taught us that 75 percent of the world is composed of water; We are more than 80 percent water.

Is it any wonder that we gravitate toward our life source when we want to feel relaxed and comforted? The quiet trickling streams or the roaring ocean waves bring a calm to our senses.

We are seeking an atmosphere that brings us into that realm of peaceful retreat.
To reflect our attraction to water, the island tropical, or island colonial plantation sentiment is the newest trend in home interior design.

Different from the garish blues, yellows and pinks of the tropical South Seas appearance, the Plantation look is quiet and subdued. Large furniture design houses, such as Ethan Allen, Thomasville and Lexington are proud to showcase their British Colonial, Ernest Hemingway and Tommy Bahama collections.

This interior scheme is semi-formal, but still traditional, and can combine styles from different periods, just as the early colonial planters did.

The rooms in the homes themselves are open to one another, often having multiple uses.

The living room is less formal and is easily transformed into a dining room by opening up a side table and using various, often non-matching, side chairs.

Bedrooms open directly onto the living area with French or pocket doors and double as an office, a library or a den, using a daybed with a hideaway trundle, some bookcases and an armoire desk.

The kitchen has opened up as well, following trends over the past twenty years.

They now include a gathering room with no demarcation between sitting, dining and food preparation areas. This room is less formal, but is not as casual as in the past.

Because this area has become a more public area, we are seeing a refinement.

Cabinets and counter styles with varying heights are looking more like furniture, and large furniture pieces are stand-alone cabinets for storage, like the armoire or linen cabinet of old.

Now, these pieces conceal televisions, stereos, or computers instead of clothes and tablecloths, and niches are being incorporated into the walls for heirloom articles. The foyer, too, has become more of a focal point, with tables and chairs, as homeowners strive to make their residences more welcoming.

Colonial life in the tropics needed to take advantage of every breeze, while dealing with the humidity.

Therefore, you wouldn't see heavily upholstered furniture, but lighter pieces, often utilizing the local woods, such as mahogany and bamboo or reeds and grasses as a rattan or wicker weave - materials that allow air to flow through.

Windows were also open to the air, with full-length shutters that closed out the scorching midday heat and vanes that opened for the cooler portions of the day and evening. The floors were native woods or tile for easy cleaning with rush mats or tea-stained oriental carpets brought by the traders from the East.

The effect was subdued and comforting, airy and clean, not cluttered.

To achieve a tropical atmosphere today, designers are scaling down room sets and using fewer, but larger, multi-functional pieces. These pieces leave more open floor space and create the effect of higher ceilings by drawing the eye upwards. Gone are the days of wall-to-wall carpeting, replaced by wood flooring or tile. There is an emphasis on the vertical to make the room seem taller with tall armoires and folding screens.

Light fabrics flow easily from windows and beds and fans are used to keep the air moving.

Fortunately, it isn't necessary to purchase a new room of furniture or to spend a great deal of money to achieve this wonderful sentiment of relaxed gentility. There are little things that decorators do that you too can implement. For example, wallcovering and borders are easy to install these days and instantly evokes a feeling of the tropics, calling you to sit and relax for awhile. Use a leafy pattern or a rattan with a couple of pieces of bamboo furniture and you are there!

There is also a tropical foliage pattern with banana leaves that pairs well with a photo-realistic bamboo sidewall. In the bedroom, place a sheet of sheer organza and hang long sheers with tabs from the windows, allowing them to sweep the floor with every breeze. Use plants and baskets or stacked boxes on surfaces. Keep the lighting subdued and use candles wherever possible. Throw out the heavy carpet and leave the floor bare, or replace it with a sisal rug in the family room or a small tea-stained Oriental rug in the parlor angled in front of a chair.

Look around your house for seating that is comfortable but not heavy, removing about a third of the furnishings already in the room. In the public spaces, attempt to use tables that can serve many uses and place them behind the couch or against a wall, leaving open space that can be quickly converted for a formal dinner or an informal neighborhood gathering.

It really doesn't matter that your Queen Anne chair sits next to a Neo-Classic table because it's the feeling of openness, not coordination that you are trying to achieve.

A Chippendale shelf with a few photos would look wonderful, for example, with a French Regency caned love seat or bench. Again, a border or wallcovering can bring the whole setting together.

It's easier than you think.
