ge Children with Diabetes: What Parents Should Know

(ARA) - This fall, school staff, parents and students will need to work together to ace the most important test of the year: managing the health of children with diabetes.
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), approximately 151,000 children in the United States have diabetes and that number is on the rise. More than 13,000 children are diagnosed every year.

Teachers and principals alike are still learning about the needs of children with diabetes during the school day. The fact is that proper diabetes management is a 24-hour a day, seven-day a week responsibility. "A huge part of managing diabetes is about changing with your environment,"
says Michael Hunter, founder of Flight For Diabetes, Inc. "Going from an unstructured summer schedule to school in the fall will require kids to alter their regimen."

Experts agree that creating an environment friendly to children with diabetes is essential to their health. Connie Saunders, a fourth grade teacher in Lake Villa, Ill., who is both the parent of a son with diabetes and a patient said, "Students should feel comfortable enough to advise an adult of their needs. This gives children an important role, which can help them become more comfortable with their situation."

To get the school year off to a healthy start, Patty Latham, a diabetes educator at Roche Diagnostics, advises that parents meet with their independent healthcare team to develop a Student Diabetes Plan, which can then be shared with school personnel.

Parents may consider calling on their local diabetes educator to train school personnel, and ensure everyone at the school understands how to implement the Student Diabetes Plan.

This year, Roche developed a tool-kit designed to help diabetes educators and parents work together to ensure children with diabetes are properly cared for in the school setting. The nationally distributed kit includes a diabetes fact sheet, a Student Diabetes Plan that can be customized for each child and a resource guide for school personnel to learn more about the disease.

"Teachers, principals, school nurses and physical education teachers must be advised about the symptoms of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) and high-blood sugar (hyperglycemia), and recognize the differences in each child,"
advises Fran Kaufman, professor of pediatrics at the University of Southern California's Keck School of Medicine. "It is important that parents submit the Student Diabetes Plan then follow-up with a meeting before school starts."

The American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) recommends that parents or guardians send their children with diabetes to school with:

* A blood glucose meter

* Test strips

* Lancets

* Ketone test strips

* Healthy snacks

* Insulin and its delivery device

* A glucagons emergency kit

SIDEBAR:

Diabetes background provided by the American Diabetes Association.

Diabetes is one of the most chronic health problems among children, and is the fifth deadliest disease in the United States.

The growth continuum of those with Type I are joined by more kids within their age group that suffer from Type II (normally associated with obesity and people over age 40).

The risk of developing Type I, however, is higher than virtually all other chronic childhood illnesses. If diabetes is not treated, serious problems such as kidney failure, limb amputations and heart disease can occur.
