Still reeling from the shock of costly heating bills this winter?

Many believe it's just the beginning.

Industry insiders suggest the United States is in for a summer of higher-than-normal cooling costs as well, leaving the average person wondering what can be done to manage rising home energy costs.

A lot of the attention has been focused on the supply of energy and building more power plants. But when it comes to reducing the energy demand of your home, you're in control.

"Yes, we have a power shortage, but we are far from powerless," says California Governor Gray Davis. "By reducing our electricity demand by even a small amount, we can reduce the price, avoid shortages and lower energy bills."

Poor-Performing Windows Cost You More

While there are many ways to make your home more energy efficient, one of the most effective is often overlooked: installing higher-performing windows.

Whether you are buying a new home or remodeling an existing one, having poor-performing windows can be aggravating and lead to significantly higher energy bills.

In many ways, it's not too difficult to determine if existing windows are sub-par.

Besides disproportionately higher energy bills, you should look for broken or cracked pieces in the frame, sill or glass, which can lead to drafts.

Also, consider the age of your windows.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy (DoE), new windows that meet its ENERGY STAR rating are twice as energy efficient as the average windows produced just 10 years ago.

For new homes, it's a matter of choosing quality windows that provide excellent energy efficiency.

According to experts at Andersen Windows, there's a misconception that quality windows only help in winter.

However, windows actually have a dramatic effect on cooling costs. ENERGY STAR-labeled windows can be 40 to 60 percent more energy efficient than basic windows, such as the aluminum-frame, single-pane style typical of homes in warm climates like Arizona, California, Florida and Texas.

According to the DoE, $100 billion could be trimmed from energy costs nationally over the next 15 years if all U.S. households and businesses used ENERGY STAR-qualified windows and other ENERGY STAR-qualified products.

The DoE also estimates the amount of energy wasted "out the window" via air conditioning, heating and leakage from homes in the U.S. exceeds the annual production of the Alaskan pipeline.

Your savings can be substantial.

A typical home in Phoenix could save more than $900 per year in cooling costs by simply switching to energy-efficient windows in place of single-pane aluminum windows, according to research by Andersen Corporation.

In addition to lowering your utility bills, windows can boost your home's resale value.

New windows can increase comfort and add character to your home by providing natural light and improving the view.

Window Selection Tips

Once you've decided to take a closer look at your windows, there are a few steps to make the process easier and help you get the most value for your money.

Contact your power company.

Many utilities across the country offer incentives to homeowners who make improvements that save energy.

Check with your local utility company to find out if you're eligible for a low-interest loan or discount for replacing your windows.

Shop Around.

Look for an Energy-Star-rated

window that requires little maintenance.

A wood window with a vinyl-coated exterior provides excellent energy efficiency with low maintenance.

Choose a window with dual-pane, low-emissivity (Low-E), and argon blend-filled glass for maximum energy-efficiency.

Compare Labels.

Look for the NFRC (National Fenestration Rating Council) label on windows.

This label provides easy-to-understand numbers that represent a window's energy efficiency in terms of its U-Factor (insulating ability) and solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC).

For both, the lower the number the better.

Work with trained window experts.
