In order to have any sort of standing in today’s crowded market, medium and small companies alike, need to understand the importance of web presence.

The whole process is initiated by a team of Internet designers, who will develop a companies website for them. This is a team of technical experts who are familiarised with coding, such as HTML, or Javascript. This is not a test of who develops contents the best, and who’s website looks the nicest and has an aesthetic that people take to. Websites that do this are unlikely to have a decent ranking in the search engines, if this is the only aspect of the site that has been focussed on.

Companies are realising this, and are becoming familiarised with web-based strategies. They have begun to understand that having the expertise of someone that understands content management practice is of the greatest value. Traffic goes through your site because it is acting as a digital billboard.

Some basic things that are important to having a successful website are listed below.

Key words

When using keywords they should be specific to the industry that you are involved in. They should be featured in your title tag, as what is put there will be featured on search engine result pages. URL and anchor text should be reflected by your keyword, making it apparent within your website content. Something else that is important is the quantity of keywords on each page. Less important keywords should be around the 2-3% mark, and the more important ones at around 5-7%.

Links

When considering links you have to remember the three different types, which are Internal, inbound & outbound. Anchor text in inbound links is important as it powers up the optimisation process. Your inbound links will be triggered by educational and government sites, (.edu and .gov) as they are more credible than .biz and .com. Internal and outbound links need to be restricted though, to no more than 3 per page, and to have older outbound links is good because search engines recognise these.

Metatags

Description and keyword Metatags are important, especially if you have a website that is specific to languages. Metatags in general used to be a buzzword in SEO but this no longer seems to be the case.

Content

If you want an abundance of traffic going through your website, like enough to warrant a congestion charge, then you want to make sure that there are plenty of fresh articles on there, that get updated with a certain level of regularity. Remember that if an article that you put on your website is any more than 40% similar to another article that you used previously, or one that you have stolen and tried to change a bit, then your website will be penalised.

Add-ons

Podcasts, Video contents, Flash home pages, images instead of text links, wap-enabling. These elements of the Internet are the next step in search engine optimisation. If they are given the correct amount of respect, then they can work wonders for the status of your website. Having all these new elements come into the picture is going to make SEO more of a juggling act. It is soon to be the case, as search engine spiders do not currently recognise a lot of this new technology, but they will, and soon.
